MY STORY
My name is Julie Filmer and am a Textile Artist working from my garden studio in the beautiful seaside town of Cromer in Norfolk, UK. I can't help but be inspired by my walks on the beach with my dog Dolly Parton (yes that is her full name!) and the sound of seagulls on the roof of my studio. In between dog walks, I paint, draw, crochet and stitch and I am proud owner of this business, The Peacock Emporium.
I can't remember a time when I haven't stitched. It's an addiction, together with my obsession for collecting beautiful fabrics, trims and buttons! As a child, I loved sewing and making and this passion has never left me. I trained and worked as a Primary School Teacher many moons ago, where my creativity was put to good use. But after the birth of my first child, I started stitching again in earnest. I achieved a City and Guilds Level 3 in Stitched Textiles during this time and mainly made gifts for friends and family. I established the Peacock Emporium in 2011 when friends and family told me to 'go for it' and I haven't looked back! More recently I have been involved in teaching art and running community projects, which I find inspiring and rewarding. I still can't quite believe how lucky I am to have made my passion into a career.
MY TECHNIQUE
The Peacock Emporium is a shop full of fabric lovelies that I have stitched using the techniques of raw-edge applique and free machine embroidery. It involves applying small pieces of fabric to a backing and then using the sewing machine needle like a pencil to stitch a design. I often show my technique on social media - so check out my socials. All my products can be personalised and I have many designs to suit all ages and tastes. Each textile has been carefully designed and is a unique one-off. I gladly take commissions - so if you like what you see I can make more or similar.
